Subject: [SFBirds] Noyo Pelagics May 30 Trip Report and upcoming trips, 6/8 and 6/14
Greetings Bay Area -

We had a good trip on May 30th including the usual Pterodroma (MUPE,
HAPE) but some surprises including Least Tern, Nazca Booby, and some
quite unseasonal Black Storm-Petrels, as well Manx Shearwater, South
Polar Skua, and all the usual stuff. Our trip report with photos is now up:

https://noyopelagics.com/may-30-2026-deepwater-pelagic-birds-and-mammals/

We're starting to see signs of the coming El Nino (see the report for
some thoughts on how big) including the above plus Masked Booby, Cocos
Booby, and Red-billed Tropicbird off Mendocino in the past 2 weeks. At
the same time we are experiencing "mega" upwelling this spring, and the
coastal ocean up here is still quite cool. What happens when cold
upwelled water meets hot tropical water? It could be quite interesting!

We still have space on our full day trip of June 14th. A couple of
scholarship spots (free ticket for students) might still be available
(contact Tim Bray cc'd above), and Mendocino Coast Audubon has also
reserved a camping spot, gratis, for whoever would like to save on
lodging (contact Roger Adamson, cc'd above).

Further, if you want to make a weekend of it, Rob Fowler has a deepwater
pelagic trip from Eureka going on the 13th. It will be fun to compare
offshore happenings on these two trips. If interested in that trip
contact Rob (cc'd above) then come on down to Noyo!

We have also scheduled a half-day trip on June 8th, when weather is
predicted to be favorable. We plan to visit both Caspar Highspot and
Noyo Canyon, two nearshore areas that have proven productive of late
(see report).

Hope you can join us for one of these or both: see
https://noyopelagics.com/ to sign up.

Cheers, Peter
