Subject: [birders] OT black mosquito with orange rectangular back spot?
I have been so enjoying my backyard birds because my grandsons are so interested and I’ve had some new to birding friends over. It just remind me of what a nice variety I have here after all these years.
Tonight, after two solid days of grandkids, I was sitting on the back deck mixing up my peanut butter mix when a mosquito landed on me. They looked down to see that it was a little larger, very black with what look like an orange symmetrical rectangle on its back. I smashed it, leaving a big bloody spot, so I’m pretty sure it was actually a mosquito. I did a little googling and can’t figure out what it was.
Do any of you have any idea?

Also, everyone knows how bad ticks are this year. I’ve had a couple of bites despite doing all the things that I can think of to avoid them. This last one started out having what I thought was worsening allergic reaction, but has turned into a pretty textbook bull’s-eye rash. I’ve had my prophylactic dose of doxycycline and hope that does the trick.
