Hi Kevin, It was an Eastern. You can tell us old birders by the outdated terms we use! Had the usual gobbler. He's gone quiet and is hanging out with the guys and waiting for Mom to be back in the mood. Mom has other worries right now...eggs, babies, predators, etc. Great birding to all, Kevin Hogan.

Eastern is most likely for this area, but Spotted can be a possibility. You can Google Eastern Towhee vs. Spotted Towhee to learn how to tell them apart. 🙂

Hi Kevin, They both could land on my shoulder and I wouldn't know the difference! I guess I will go with Eastern. Great birding! Kevin.

I don't recall when it happened, but Rufous-sided towhee is no longer a species. It was split into Spotted and Eastern.

Rufous-sided towhee yesterday. I attended M.U. Columbia and I lived in a dorm across from Peace Park. I would laze around over there. Of course, anything but study! I watched a beautiful bird by the little creek. On heading back to the dorm and looking at my bird book, I realized it was a Rufous-sided towhee. Always has been a very special bird to me. My apologies. I missed the Shannon Co. in the subject line. Cheers!
