Subject: [sd-birds] WRMC Results
The West River Migration Count (WRMC) was conducted May 8-11, 2026 with
good weather and windy days.  The count extended from the North Dakota
border to the Nebraska border with Harding, Butte, Lawrence, Meade,
Pennington, Custer, and Fall River counties participating. Forty-nine
observers counted over 18,000 birds and 190 species with a total of 237
hours birding and 1988 miles of driving/walking. The top three counties
for specie numbers were Pennington, Fall River, and Harding.  The top
three number of birds recorded were Red-winged Blackbirds, Common
Grackle, and Western Meadowlarks. Migration was definitely in progress
and I appreciate all that participated and got out birding to take a
census of migration birds.
