At S. Bluestem Pkwy. just southwest of W. 107th Ter. in Olathe (38.9319285, -94.8775133), I found a painted bunting today, 5/19/2026. It was a gorgeous male that glowed in the afternoon sun.

https://ebird.org/checklist/S342613299 I checked this site on 5/11/2026 and a week earlier. However, no painted bunting showed up. It seems the painted bunting's arrival at this site was later than at two other locations in Johnson County (see tabulation below).

*Note: 5/9/2026 was the date reported by Steve Phillips. I confirmed the sighting there on 5/11/2026.
All three locations harbored painted buntings last year. I find it fascinating that this species repeatedly returns to the same haunts, but not necessarily on the same date.
