today, at pelican lake state recreation area, a northern mockingbird literally popped into my field of view as i was trying to identify another bird, less than 15 feet away. it gazed at me for about 10 seconds before dropping down into the thicket. perhaps because of the strong winds, it never vocalized. later as i left the park, i came upon a flock of 145 cattle egrets foraging in a grassy field.
