Around 9:00 AM this morning I visited the Bell's Vireo area, along Calle Real N. of the 101 near the first spur W. of Farren Road. The area where the BeVi has been seen and heard previously (a clump of Arundo and castor bean about 180 m W. of the spur) was quiet except for Common Yellowthroats, Lark Sparrows, Lesser Goldfinches, Cal Towhees, and Allen's Hummingbirds. I continued walking west looking for migrants and was surprised to hear a BeVi sing more than 200 m W. of the previous sighting area, on the N. side of Calle Real (away from the highway). My location was roughly 34.439958, -119.937367, and the bird seemed to be about 4-5 m N. of me. On this occasion the Merlin app correctly identified the BeVi by voice, though it has consistently failed to do so on my previous visits to the area, despite frequent and loud singing by the bird.
