In July, 2016, Rodney Wright and Malcolm Gold kindly directed us to the Lone Elm Industrial Park in Olathe for our very first view of the painted bunting. The species has staying power at this very location. Ten years on, it continues to delight birders here.
Early this afternoon, 5/10, my wife and I parked our car at W. 151st St. just west of S. Valley Rd. (38.854698, -94.841282). Soon, a beautiful male painted bunting appeared - an excellent Mother's Day present. The Sunday before, we also checked out this spot, but had no luck.
