The few of us who braved the cold drizzle on the Columbus Audubon field trip to parks along the Scioto River were treated to a good fallout of mid-Spring migrants. We stopped at Scioto Audubon MetroPark and Berliner Park, and I later pushed on to the Scioto River Trail at both Confluence Park and Marble Cliff. Lots of singing warblers, especially in the larger forest patches; Berliner was exceptional, though many of the birds were able to hide in the early-leafed-out foliage. Thank God for Merlin! Notables included:
Flycatchers -- still largely AOL, with Great Crested at many locations, but the only other was a Least calling at Berliner Vireos -- plenty of Warbling and Red-eyed, but also had singing Blue-headed at Scioto Audubon and Tarpy Woods Thrushes -- Berliner had Wood, Hermit, and Swainson's, but we couldn't suss out a Gray-cheek
Warblers -- swarms of Yellow-rumps at both Scioto Audubon and the Marble Cliff Scioto bike path, but a good mix of other species with them. Scioto Audubon had 11 species, with Blackburnian, Cape Mays, Prothonotary, and 2 singing N.Waterthrushes the highlights. Berliner had 17, including many Ovenbirds, Redstarts, Magnolias, a singing Kentucky, and a very cooperative Black-throated Blue. The Scioto Trail at Marble Cliff had 10 species, similar to what was at Scioto Audubon, but with several Tennessees and Magnolias.
Sparrows -- still a few lingering White-throats, as well as the expected Songs & Chippies Orioles -- Baltimores common all along the river, and Marble Cliff had a singing Orchard Cardinalids -- Rose-br.Grosbeaks at many locations; also a singing Scarlet Tanager at Berliner
