May is here and Breeding Bird activity is peaking. Many of our resident nesters are already setting up for second and in some cases (Anna's Hummingbird) third brood attempts of the year. San Francisco (including SE Farallon and Alcatraz Island) is now up to 75 species confirmed breeding!
Some new mainland confirmations from recent days:
Band-tailed Pigeon - observed collecting nesting material in Mount Sutro OSP, 5/3
Brown Creeper - carrying food to nest near Rob Hill/Presidio, 4/27
Northern Rough-winged Swallow - nest building in HWY overpass near Dragonfly Creek/Presidio, 4/19 (Daniel Scali)
House Wren - feeding young near upper pond in McClaren Park, 5/8 (D. Scali)
Marsh Wren - pair building nest and occupied nest, confirmed in adjacent blocks at Lake Merced, 5/4
Pine Siskin - feeding fledged young near Polo Fields/Golden Gate Park, 5/2
Savannah Sparrow - adults with fledgeling, Candlestick State Rec Area, 5/2 (Mark Frankel)
and last and perhaps least depending on your opinion of introduced species -
SWINHOE'S WHITE-EYE - adults carrying food to a nest near the corner of Waller and Clayton this morning, 5/9, where they have been consistently present since January of last year.
This as far as I know is the northernmost confirmation of breeding for this species in the State.
If anyone is up for some "assignments" to track down a few more elusive local breeders drop my a line off list.
