Subject: Shorebirds - Columbiana County

The water level at Guilford Lake State Park in Columbiana County was lowered last fall to rebuild the dam. Edges of the lakebed are dry, and there is now a large mudflat area and some water channels. Shorebirds that usually migrate past are stopping for the night or longer.

Yesterday a Red-necked Phalarope stopped and was still present this morning. From OH-172, turn at Hanna Drive to the boat ramp area. From the large pile of rocks in the parking area look out towards the tree stumps and the water channel. Bird was standing/floating there both days, usually not with any other birds. Pipits also visible.

Other viewing spots around lake- Teegarden Rd picnic shelter, Teegarden Rd gravel pulloff with pine trees, beach parking lot, Mark’s Landing restaurant (far end of parking lot), parking area by park office, boat ramp across from Guilford Lake Event Center. Also Gamble Wetland (Depot Rd).

Other species - Dunlin, Pipit, Least SP, Spotted SP, Solitary SP, Greater/Lesser YL. See eBird for photos and species counts. SB Dowitcher and Black-bellied Plover came and left.
See eBird lists for counts.

American Bittern reported at Firestone-Yeagley WA (Depot Rd). Not sure if still present today.
