I also tried fruit feeders after seeing them on an AZ birding trip one spring. As for Carol, no luck at all on half orange. However, western tanagers and BH grosbeak loved small pots of raspberry and blackberry jelly.
I also hang 1/2 apples in my outdoor x-mas tree each winter. Varied thrushes enjoy that.
