Subject: [cayugabirds-l] May 7 Thursday Birding Meetup Recap and Next Week's Plans
Oh, this is the morning we've been waiting for with our Thursday Birding
Meetups! Today's birders along the Dryden rail trail in Freeville saw a
veritable smorgasbord of 49 species, hitting all the major groups of birds
we can expect in our region! (thanks for the ebird, Diane Morton!)
Twenty-two of us were thrilled to see several First of Year birds and life
birds for some of us. We got a redstart right off the bat to get things
rolling with northern yellow warblers, common yellowthroat, yellow rumped
and northern waterthrush following right behind. A glorious rose breasted
grosbeak perched high in the morning sun, as did kestrels. A spotted
sandpiper and a few solitary sandpipers, posing and flying, kept our
attention and offered a chance to differentiate between them. Bobolinks
graced a pasture and the woods were busy with great crested flycatchers,
least flycatcher, eastern kingbirds, catbirds, woodpeckers and our resident
songbirds. Yay!! Afterward, we gathered for breakfast and conversation at
the Corner Brew in Dryden, grateful for weather just warm enough to sit on
the deck.
Want to join us for next week's birding adventure? Meet us at 7:00 am at
the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve. From Ithaca: Take Route 13 South
and then veer left on Route 34/96 toward Spencer. Go about 8.5 miles to the
main parking area on the left.
