Responding to Fred’s question, I can assure everyone that the Ohio border has been crossed. My First-of-Year Northern Oriole and Rose-breasted Grosbeak both appeared on 4/22, with the first Ruby-throated Hummingbird following on 4/29. All were males. Yesterday we added a female RBGR. We, a mile west of Milan, are ½ mile north of the Washtenaw/Monroe county line, putting us 25 miles north of the Ohio border.

Among other things, I guess Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks eat seeds. For many years I’ve noticed the Grosbeaks, Orioles and Hummingbirds typically arrive in close concert with one another. This year I have had Grosbeaks for a week or ten days with nary a peep from an Oriole or a flash from a Hummer. Granted the Dandelions have just started blooming and the Maples are just sprouting leaflets while the buds on Oaks are still tightly closed here. My question is…have all the Grosbeaks I see become adapted to human-provided sustenance where otherwise there would be none? What “right” do they have to expect any kind of seeds at this time of year? Also…is anyone seeing an advancing line of Orioles and Hummers yet or is the line frozen down near the Ohio border?
