I second what Fred said. No bluebird boxes if you are not willing to monitor them weekly and kick out any House Sparrows. If you don't kick the House Sparrows out, you are contributing to the destruction of Bluebirds. I have seen many House Sparrow nests on top of deceased Bluebirds and eggs. House Sparrows will kill any other bird species to usurp their nest, if they want to nest there. They are more attached to their nest site than to their mate. The Michigan Bluebird Society has monitoring forms, and helpful hint for identifying nests of various native and non-native birds, and how to deal with House Sparrows.

The first thing you need to consider is...do not erect or provide any Bluebird "housing" if you don't have the time to "monitor" your nest boxes and are unwilling or unable to "manage" the non-native competitors that you will most-likely encounter.

Good morning. I am living in a newish place - mini farm with a couple of bluebird pairs present. This is the first time I have had the pleasure of living among them. I am too busy with planting and growing to invest in time and research on bluebirds, but if there are any enthusiasts near Dexter, MI who can help, message me.
