Subject: [slocobirding] California Bird Atlas! All the Fledglings!!
Hi folks! I’m overdue for an update on the California Breeding Bird Atlas!

The fledglings are out and about! I’ve personally been seeing TONS of Chickadees, Titmice, and most of all, streaky-screamy-baby Juncoes, everywhere. (Check under your outdoor table at lunch, or morning coffee!) The brand-new Red-tailed Hawks are starting to fledge out of their nests, and the Anna’s Hummingbirds are on their second round of making another generation, for the year!

My most exciting finds this week were an American Kestrel nest in the parking lot of a Trader Joe’s, and a California Towhee that decided we needed to stop using our front door area so she could finish her nest. The Black Phoebes in my neighborhood have finished Round 1 of breeding already. I haven’t located Round 2 as of this posting. :-) But I will!

Here’s a fascinating look at the species that we’ve already succeeded in finding in the county: https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/county/US-CA-079

Where I’d like to focus people’s attention this next couple weeks is on the type of sighting that is exemplified in this post: https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/checklist/S329589425 Dr. Pressler saw a Dark-eyed Junco, feeding a recently-fledged juvenile, and made a quick checklist. THIS IS SCIENCE! (I will mention, it can help the scientific dataset, if you have five minutes to make it a “complete” checklist; however, the “incidental” checklist is also very useful, so do what you can! Life is busy, we get it.) Birds are everywhere. Let’s make our first year of the project one where ALL of the towns — restaurants, shopping centers, homes — in our daily lives are in COMPLETED Atlas Blocks, in the first year of the effort.

Finally, I’d like to give a shoutout to several of our top contributors to the Atlas, who have been giving great checklists from all sorts of birding adventures around the county:

10: Robbie & Bob Revel
9: Jim Royer
8: Stephen Peterson
7: Yamina Pressler
6: Eric Weir
5: Alexander Yan (yay for checklists from the In-and-Out Drive-thru in A-Town!)
4: Christine Houge
3: Kelly Kretchmer
2: Ben Kolstad … and
1: Anne Stockert

But the absolute GOLD MEDAL for being in a league by herself:
THANK YOU PETRA CLAYTON for having 3x the number of checklists and 2x the number of confirmed species, throughout the county compared to the next closest birder. Folks, she is leading this effort for all of us!!! Let’s all aspire to emulate her amazing work for this project.

There’s still plenty of tine to join the effort! We have over four and half years remaining in the Atlas data collection window! Come join the fun!

Bird on,
