Interesting, Jesse.
It was great birding in Polk County until just after 12PM. A good
number of FOY 2026 species and good numbers as well. Shorebirds were
scarce: Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs one of each, solitary sandpiper was
a surprise and of course a number of Killdeer. Waterfowl was also scarce.
My first opportunity to check off Northern Mockingbird (I was surprised
that it is considered rare). There were a number of them seen last year
around Saylorville Lake. Eastern Warbling Vireo. Hope to add the Western
Warbling Vireo when I head out to in western Nebraska for the NOU meeting.
Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Marsh Wren, Hermit Thrush
(2), Baltimore Oriole, Northern Yellow Warbler, White-throated Sparrow (2),
Eastern Towhee (4), Chipping Sparrow, Tennessee Warbler (3), Yellow-rumped
Warbler (30+ in the ravines on each side of the Saylorville Visitor's
Center, which is closed for remodeling, 90% of birds just seemed to all
take a nap at the same time (just after noon). Tried 3 more places but...
So I returned to my daughter's home for a siesta myself.
God Bless.
