Gray Flycatcher (Empidonax wrightii) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Apr 24, 2026 08:17 by Nick & Jane
- Meadow Park--San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, California

- Comments: "This empid’s large size first struck me when I spotted the bird perched three-quarters up in an oak. Clearly was too big for a western! Right away I noticed its large rounded (and only slightly peaked) head, which was also flat and wide in a side profile. It had a thin and even eyering (no teardrop), and overall pale grey tones, and long, thin and even bill. Its chest was very pale with a wash of a drab vest, and between and below that was a light belly wash of yellow. The dark wings had a medium contrast with its pale wingbars. The tail, which it preened, appeared medium-long, and its primary projections appeared medium as well. The throat was pale as were its lores. The cheek itself had a light olive wash and the crown was dingy grey. The back, what little I could see, was pale grey. The lengthy bill (though on the short end for a gray), had an upper mandible that was dark and a lower that was yellow-orange tapering to dark. The face had a sweet, innocent expression, as opposed to a peeved dusky look like a kid about to embark on some mischief. The tail didn’t pump that I could see but then the bird was partially obstructed and there was tail preening going on. The bird quicky disappeared into the oak and couldn’t refind."
