I have not tried a nesting box you are asking about, but I recently got a bluebird feeder, which has 1.25" opening. I was concerned the opening is too small but the reviews were good. I was surprised how quickly the bluebirds got on the mealworm action and only nuthatches occasionally get into the feeder to steal a treat (they prefer more accessible suet nuggets). None of the other smaller birds, including the sparrows, can figure out how to get in. So, it may be worth a try. here is my excellent feeder from Bird Haven, by the way:
