Subject: [NHBirds] Sandhill Cranes Ossipee
On Wednesday I got a call from another Dana- Dana Simpson from just over
the Tuftonboro boarder in Ossipee whose land boarders Garland Pond. He was
so excited.
He described how he heard this bugelling sound above him. He looked up to
see THREE large birds with long straight necks and long trailing legs
headind towards Maine. He couldn't help himself he said: he just let out a
loud imitation of their call. He breathlessly described how they circled
around dropping lower and then finally continued on their way. He ran for
his bird book and was sure they were cranes - not herons with their
straight necks. I assured him he was correct probably a pair with last
year's young maybe headed to Fryberg or north of Lake Sebago.

Can't you just picture the scene!
It was wonderful hearing his delightful story. It just lit up my day. And
if you knew Dana as I do, it was so much fun seeing this quiet, soft spoken
man so excited and anxious to share his story.

We need a few such stories these days.
