Weather:
Mostly sunny in the morning, clouding up in the afternoon. Winds were light
and variable. Temps ranged from 48F to 55F. Just after 3pm more clouds
rolled in and the lake breeze intensified, dampening any hopes that the
flight would get back to Frisbee.
Raptor Observations:
Overall it was a slightly frustrating day with the majority of the flight
going around us inland. The lake breeze kicked in early, around 9:30am,
just when some birds were starting to get up. We moved the count to Frisbee
Hill, but the lake breeze was too strong and the birds were pushed too far
inland so we still couldnt see them. Around noon, a light southerly wind
shifted the flight line directly over us for about an hour before the lake
breeze kicked back up and pushed the flight south out of sight. The birds
that we saw during other hours were specks that were as far inland as you
could see! Other observers went to Ridge Rd and confirmed a big flight
along the ridge.
Non-raptor Observations:
The excitement for the day was early at the park when a Coopers Hawk dove
into the hedgerow in front of the platform and caught an American Woodcock!
A Bald Eagle also dropped a Largemouth Bass on the lawn next to the
platform. Dinner!
