The first male Hummingbird showed up yesterday. The two others that have been here for several days are either females or young males.
This morning I saw the cutest thing. The male Hummingbird was perched on the edge of the pedestal bath having a drink. A half hour later, he was back again for more water. Maybe the drip into the bowl attracted him.
I can't figure out why a pair of Tree swallows seem to be annoying the Bluebirds. They fly around the nestbox, sometimes landing on it or even peeking inside. I just checked, and the young are OK and probably ready to fledge in about a week or so. I do see the Bluebird parents nearby. There is no shortage of nestboxes either. They are probably just ticked off because the Bluebirds took their favorite box.
Another mystery is the Red-winged blackbird that has visited the feeder for a few days. He is super glossy, similar to a grackle. Yet the one I saw in winter had noticeably velvety plumage. Both were viewed from the same distance.
Some White-throated sparrows are still here. Seeing a lone White-crowned Sparrow a few says ago certainly was a surprise.
The water getting splashed out of the birdbath provides just enough mud for the Robins to use as building material.
