Hi all,
We observed 62 species overall and 14 species of shorebirds at the north end Salton Sea (NESS). Locations include Salt Creek, State Park Campgrounds, and 84th. We did not focus much on scoping the sea, itself. We recorded only a single Red Knot in what appeared to be a partial molt into breeding plumage. Shorebirds seen only at the NESS include the Red Knot, Black-bellied Plover, Snowy Plover, Willet, Sanderling, and Dunlin. At the San Jacinto Wildlife Area (SJWA, April 19) we observed 102 species overall and 13 species of shorebirds. Shorebirds seen only at the SJWA include Long-billed Dowitcher, Wilson's Snipe, Solitary Sandpiper (2), Lesser Yellowlegs, and Greater Yellowlegs. Shorebirds seen at both locations were Black-necked Stilt, American Avocet, Killdeer, Semipalmated Plover, Hudsonian Whimbrel, Long-billed Curlew, Least Sandpiper, and Western Sandpiper. Thanks to Charity Hagen, Julie Szabo and Josh Worwa for keeping tallies and working up ebird entries. Numbers are subject to change as additional data is shared.
Sincerely, Tony Metcalf SBVAS
