Subject: [slocobirding] Spring Bird Yard Musing... Morro Bay
Hello Birders,

As the Spring season advances our migrant wintering visitors have basically moved on. No longer do the 20+ White-crown and Golden-crowns vie for the tossed seeds and bathing opportunities provided. A very few still linger. Harris’s Sparrow was last seen on April 6.

For now the arriving orioles have attracted my attention with various plumaged Hooded being the most frequent and even the much rarer Orchard making an appearance.

As the breeding season continues the most numerous species in our yard have once again become the House Sparrows. Glancing out the window yesterday I was privy to a glimpse of interesting breeding display. A female HOSP was intently involved in seed eating as a male approached. The male then changed his posture, standing up “straight and tall”, puffed out his chest, drooping his wings and proceeding to strut stiffly in a small, tight circle around the female. The female seeming oblivious. He circled at least 5 times before the pair flew off into the brush. I don’t recall observing this House Sparrow display in the past.

Onward! 😊
