Subject: [birders] FW: πŸ¦‡ Happy International Bat Day (Bat PUC update)
It looks like the newest versions of the Birdweather PUC continue to be an audio-based product (no radio-based detections as the β€œTerra-Listens” device has) but the newest version of PUC has microphones with a broader range of frequency response than the original PUCs have. Still, Birdweather says their online analyzing software will now be returning results for ALL waveforms detected by both versions of the PUC. See below. I don’t know what the frequency response is for the microphone elements in cell-phones but…in theory, β€œMerlin” could also be used to identify Mammal, Reptile, Amphibian (and other) sounds in the environment if they wanted to.

πŸ¦‡ Happy International Bat Day

International Bat Day is about awareness β€” bats play a critical role in ecosystems around the world, but most of their activity is effectively invisible to us.

That’s a big part of the motivation behind this project.

<https://mailchi.mp/birdweather/birdweather-bat-puc-12933480?e=76c68f13a5> View this email in your browser

<https://www.birdweather.com/puc-bat-edition>

It feels like the perfect moment for a quick update.

We just received the first pilot production Bat PUC units, and they’re just going into active testing. This is a big milestone β€” moving from prototypes to something much closer to what will ship.

πŸ¦‡ Timing

We’re currently tracking first shipments around the end of May.

The main thing taking a bit more iteration than expected is the rechargeable battery system β€” making sure it holds up for real overnight use and repeated cycles. It’s one of those details that’s easy to get almost right, but worth taking the extra time to get fully right.

Everything else is coming together well, and we’ll share more as testing continues.

BirdNET 3.0 β€” early bat support (geomodel)

<https://birdnet.cornell.edu/>

🌍 11K Global Species

* 🐦 Birds: 9,834 species
* πŸ› Insects: 699 species
* 🐸 Amphibians: 647 species
* πŸ¦‡ Mammals: 350 species
* 🦎 Reptiles: 11 species

One exciting (and unexpected) development: the latest BirdNET 3.0 geomodel now includes regional data for: πŸ¦‡ 252 unique bat species

To be clear, this is geomodel support (range / regional context) β€” not full audio classification β€” but this is super exciting to see.

βš™οΈ128 kHz beta rollout (update)

For those patiently waiting for the 128 kHz bat beta for existing PUCs:

That work is continuing, but it’s currently sequenced behind the Bat Edition effort β€” making sure the new hardware and full ultrasonic pipeline are exactly where they need to be first.

More to come soon.

πŸš€ First batch β€” final call for pre-orders

We’re getting very close to locking the first production run.

If you’ve been thinking about it, now’s the time:

πŸ‘‰ Pre-orders for the first batch will be closing soon

The Bat Edition is purpose-built for full ultrasonic capture

🌌 Where this is headed

Now that we can run these continuously overnight, things start to change:

* it’s not just detections β€” it’s sequences
* not just calls β€” behavior
* not just moments β€” patterns

More soon.

We can’t thank you all enough for the support you’ve given our little project. Join us in collecting as many sounds, from as many species, in as many locations as we can, while we can.

Thank You!

-Tim, Sam, Vitalii and Yurii (your BirdWeather team)
