Subject: [NFLbirds] more on Dunlins
In yet another excellent report, Don touched on Dunlins. They have some neat secrets I’ll share.

Dunlins do arrive in October in winter plumage because they molt before flying south. Most other pipers migrate months earlier, like July, so they arrive with much of their breeding garb attached. Dunlins grow their black belly patch late, because the area where most nest is extremely far north (North-Central Canada). This is also true of others that don’t get their spring colors until late April and May: LB Dowitcher, Sanderling, Red Knot, etc.

If you like this kind of information about birds, you are welcomed to get on my bird picture list. Nobody gets your name, it’s free and you can get off whenever you like.

Buckel up; the heart of the spring bird migration is a week to ten days away!
