It was mostly clear, mild, and a bit windy on the bird survey today. 55 species were found. New returning arrivals for the year include Purple Gallinule, White Ibis, Prothonotary Warbler, and Eastern Kingbird. Little-blue Heron, Neotropic Cormorant, and Anhinga numbers are greatly increasing with 2 Neotropic Cormorants already sitting on nests in the Otter Lake Heronry. Here is my list for today: Canada Geese - 4 Wood Duck - 30 Blue-winged Teal - 48 Ring-necked Duck - 1 Pied-billed Grebe – 23 Neotropic Cormorant - 16 (2 sitting on nests.) Double-crested Cormorant - 1 Anhinga - 52 American Bittern - 3 Great-blue Heron - 4 Great Egret - 34 Snowy Egret - 14 Little-blue Heron - 72 White Ibis - 42 Black Vulture - 11 Turkey Vulture – 15 Red-shouldered Hawk - 3 King Rail - 1 Purple Gallinule - 1 (new early date!) Common Gallinule - 80 American Coot – 113 Greater Yellowlegs - 1 Mourning Dove - 2 Belted Kingfisher - 2 Red-bellied Woodpecker - 3 Hairy Woodpecker - 1 Northern Flicker - 1 Pileated Woodpecker - 4 Eastern Phoebe - 2 Eastern Kingbird - 1 White-eyed Vireo- 10 Yellow-throated Vireo - 2 Blue Jay - 2 American Crow - 6 Fish Crow - 13 Tree Swallow - 26 Barn Swallow - 4 Carolina Chickadee - 5 Tufted Titmouse - 6 Carolina Wren - 11 Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - 4 Eastern Bluebird - 1 Brown Thrasher - 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler - 3 Yellow-throated Warbler - 1 Pine Warbler - 2 Prothonotary Warbler - 2 Common Yellowthroat - 6 Swamp Sparrow - 1 White-throated Sparrow - 1 Northern Cardinal – 8 Red-winged Blackbird - 20 Common Grackle - 5 Brown-headed Cowbird - 8 Herps: American Alligator Red-eared Slider Southern Painted Turtle Blanchard's Cricket Frog Green Treefrog Coastal Plain Leopard Frog Odonates: Lilypad Forktail Common Green Darner Eastern Pondhawk Blue Dasher Common Whitetail "red" Saddlebags Black Saddlebags Good birding!
