Like last year, our Seneca Rocks volunteers that install and monitor owl nest boxes were out and about the beginning of March, and unbelievably they found another saw-whet in a nest box on March 4. Last year in Clarion Co we had two active nest boxes, but we did not detect them until early April.
Yesterday we went back to the box, located (no specifics) in Oil Creek State Park, and the bird was still there, tucked down over the nest box bedding tight as we quickly opened the box and got a photo. No eggs were visible beneath the bird but given that it is still present, and in good habitat, I feel safe in saying that it is likely a female on eggs. So once again, we will continue to monitor the activity and hope for the best. I thought it was too good to be true that we would have another nesting owl but I really hope that this one succeeds for another great breeding record for the atlas !
