Tussey Mountain Hawk Watch State College, Pennsylvania, USA Daily Raptor Counts: Mar 23, 2026 -------------------------------------------------------------------
Observation start time: 11:00:00 Observation end time: 16:30:00 Total observation time: 5.5 hours
Official Counter: Thomas Filip
Observers: Nick Bolgiano
Weather: Dense fog at the lookout in the morning that cleared after a couple of hours. Cloudy for the rest of the day with a snow squall around 12:00. NW winds for most of the day at 20-22mph, slowing a little to 14-16mph at the end of the day. The temperature decreased in the afternoon from a high of 4.2℃ to a low of 2.1℃.
We were quite surprised to get this many GOEA today given the weather conditions. We spotted 2 GOEA at the same time, both soaring and gaining altitude before continuing, though they went different directions and left at different times. The first left the ridge and went N while the second continued NE along the ridge top. The last GOEA went past more quickly over the ridge top. All of the GOEA today were very high which was unusual with the lack of thermals and cloud cover.
Mostly a quiet day but we did have 4 COME flyover the ridge, as well as a flock of AGOL, and 1 PISI.
Predictions: Tomorrow looks to be sunny with low NW winds in the morning shifting to moderate SW later in the afternoon. If the wind speed increases, we should have a decent chance at seeing some GOEA tomorrow. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Thomas Filip () Tussey Mountain Hawk Watch information may be found at: tusseymountainspringhawkwatch.org/
