Whatsapp is a Zuckerberg thing, I am not going to support him or expose myself to his predation. Not sure about Discord folks, but it's some venture capital outfit and they are certainly looking to gain something. The stuff that list-serves do best doesn't require, or even benefit from, instant messaging; some things are best mulled over a bit before putting them out there.

That's why Discord and Whatsapps groups are so popular. They provide a platform for immediate real time discussion because you get a notice that someone has posted a question possibly uploaded a photo which immediately goes to dozens or hundreds of birder for their input....like a series of texts in a large group. Email is painfully slow and has other inherent problems supporting a discussion while apps like Discord and WhatsApp are instantaneous and easily support a real time discussion. Also note that most of the younger birders are on these apps (they are the ones out finding the birds and raising the questions.) These apps have succeeded the list servers just like the list servers succeeded the phone message system.

If you follow the links below and download the apps to use these you will find they are actively used by Leon and surrounding County birders- most recently about the cave swallow that was found last night at Gardner Landing.

It is unfortunate, in my view, that birding list-serves are nearing extinction. EBird is a wonderful resource for many aspects of birding, but it is not a good forum to discuss birds and matters related to birding. If locating and listing birds is all one is interested in, eBird is probably a better tool than list serves. But you can't have a discussion about molt, migration patterns and weather, behaviour, birding ethics, and on and on in eBird. I find consideration of those matters more interesting than building my lists (not that I don't work on that, too). As for social media, many of us are not interested in contributing to the interests and wealth of Zuckerberg, Musk, et al. I realize I am a dinosaur and list-serves aren't coming back, but their demise is a loss to our appreciation and understanding of birds.

I don't believe many people are using this list service for birding anymore. Most of the people who are birding regularly have moved to eBird which sends out alerts to everybody whenever you post a good bird. Otherwise they are using Discord or Whatsapp for birding discussions.

A very important person to this Bird List just asked me to do a favor for her and I would cut off my right arm for her.

However, I suspect this might be a scam. Is anyone aware of any scams on NF Birders?
