Jack Hilsabeck passed away this past week. He taught science at North Andrew High School in Rosendale north of Saint Joseph for 35 years. After retiring, he moved to Saint Joseph.
He banded birds for over fifty years. He once showed me a tabulation sheet for his 1971 banding season that included 11 loggerhead shrikes.
He taught ornithology and bird identification courses to Missouri Western State University Biology students. He ran a bird banding station on the campus for over 15 years, teaching students how to record measurements and data about the birds during the process. On October 9th, 2015, he and his students banded a Townsend's warbler, the only record of this species in Missouri.
He participated in the Wings Over Weston birding festival at Weston Bend State Park for many years. He gave numerous presentations about birds and birding to many organizations in the local community.

He was a friend and mentor to many in the local birding community including me. His wealth of knowledge about birds and nature in general, warm sense of humor, easy going nature and friendship will be greatly missed.
