Yesterday I was thrilled to get a call from our local Seneca Rocks Audubon nest box monitors Mal Hays, Larry Towse and Nick Kolodick checking the boxes at Oil Creek State Park. (same folks that located our two nesting saw-whets last year here in Clarion Co)
During checks they found a saw-whet sitting tight in a box, it did not leave the box or move off its position while they were checking and getting a quick photo. They reported they felt she may already be on eggs though they were unable to see any for certain. After looking at our dates from last year on eggs, and looking at Birds of the World (BNA) it seems like the earliest dates for even northern sites is right around now, but the eggs we had last year would have been laid around March 18-20. So we'll have to see if it's a female checking out the site. We'll wait a week or 10 days and recheck, I'd not like to discourage her from staying in the box. Either way, another exciting development in our saw-whet adventures !
