[NS: The "default" dark shearwater in midwinter is often Short-tailed Shearwater, particularly in waters to the north of us, but it appears that a small number of Sooty Shearwaters still linger here. The birds seen today all had robust long bills, with a proportionally longer part of the bill in front of the nostrils; the underwings showed silvery flashes contrasting with darker primaries on at least two birds that I saw well; and the wing tips were curled upwards in flight (see last photo).]"
