Hi Birders,
With a large group of 24 birders this morning at the San Pedro River
birding walk, birders got to choose between going clockwise or
counter-clockwise on the trails as the docents split into two groups. The
good news was there was no bad choice as both groups found 37 species with
the total between the two groups reaching 44 species. The real highlight
today was probably the warm weather, hinting of spring coming soon. The
birds seemed to take their cue as bird signs of spring were definitely the
theme. Yellow-rumped Warblers were accumulating along with Lesser
Goldfinches and Lazuli Buntings in the tops of the cottonwoods and all of
the sudden we now had singing Vermilion Flycatchers at various points.
Along with singing, some males were seen display-flying and chasing
females. There were enough around for both groups to trigger the eBird
quantity alert. Another first of the year for the walk was a Great Blue
Heron perched on top of one of the traditional nests. We couldn't find the
Louisiana Waterthrush or Greater Pewee that have persisted this winter but
one group did find the continuing White-throated Sparrow as a nice
highlight.
With spring on the horizon, we will be adjusting the start time of the
walks for March thru May to a 7:00AM start time. Walks will be on the
second and fourth Wednesday of March, but there will also be a Saturday
walk at the end of March. Walks will transition to every Wednesday in
April along with the "Big Morning Birding Challenge" as part of the
"Celebrate the San Pedro" festival on Saturday, April 25 so keep an eye on
the events calendar on the Friends of the San Pedro River facebook page:
The Friends of the San Pedro River leads birding walks on the second and
fourth Wednesday of each month. For the months of March thru May, the walks
leave at
7:00a from the BLM’s San Pedro House south of State Route 90 just west of
the
San Pedro River. We walk about 4km, and we are out for about three hours.
Bring your own binoculars, a hat and water.
The next San Pedro River birding walk is on Wednesday, 11 March, at 7:00a.
