On the flip side, back in 94-95, and maybe again in 98, two very warm winters, people were t remarking about having redwings at their feeders all winter. And I had the first and only banded young females return to their natal area at the ponds. Can’t prove it but I bet at the time that they didn’t leave at all, hence finding it very convenient to ‘return’. Sent from my iPhone

Absolutely. The first south wind day with temperatures into the 50s no doubt will have many red-winged blackbirds, common grackles, killdeer and other early arrivals. If it stays cold which it is looking like in might into first week of March, you might see a few pioneers returning or wintering birds moving around. In 2015, a record cold February and very cold March, ebird reports show red-winged blackbirds didn't arrive enmasse until March 30-31!!! So they are very weather dependant. Since this February is nowhere near as cold as 2015, I suspect will see them in 1-2 weeks unless March turns frigid.

Unlike in other years, I've been seeing (returning?) redwings in drips and drabs of late (some males and even 6 females). In other years I've seen a good deal more of them by now. I'm wondering if the colder winter this year has driven them further south than normal- hence the later arrival here.Any ideas?Much appreciated.Sar-- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Visit: http://LISTS.cornell.edu for more information Posting Address: <Cayugabirds-L...> Archives: The Mail Archive: //www.mail-archive.com/<cayugabirds-l...>/maillist.html" class="hft-urls">https://www.mail-archive.com/<cayugabirds-l...>/maillist.html Sightings: Please submit your observations to eBird at http://www.ebird.org. -- -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Visit: http://LISTS.cornell.edu for more information Posting Address: <Cayugabirds-L...> Archives: The Mail Archive: //www.mail-archive.com/<cayugabirds-l...>/maillist.html" class="hft-urls">https://www.mail-archive.com/<cayugabirds-l...>/maillist.html Sightings: Please submit your observations to eBird at http://www.ebird.org. --
