Spent the past two days birding around locations in the central portion of Contra Costa County with a few observations I found of note:
Blue-winged Teal - a male and female were with other dabbling ducks on the Waterbird Way pond near Martinez 2/15
Northern Rough-winged Swallows - (4) were flying around and vocalizing over Waterbird Regional Preserve/McNabney Marsh 2/15, the first I've detected in the area this year and a typical FOS date.
(Slate-colored) Dark-eyed Junco - one clear cut representative of the eastern population was with a large flock of (Oregon) Juncos along the trail between the main staging area/parking lot and Little Hills at Las Trampas Regional Wilderness, 2/16. In addition there were two more potential Slate-colored/Cassiar type Juncos in the area, one in the same flock as the Slate-colored and another with a separate group along Bollinger Canyon Rd. near the driveway for the EBRPD lot. Over a span of 2.5 hours I totalled a minimum of 500 juncos in this area, (at an average weight of 20g/0.7oz per junco, that comes out to ~23 lbs. of Junco!!)
White-throated Sparrows - (3, adult white-stripe, adult tan stripe and a first winter) were with a Junco/Golden-crown Flock at Las Trampas near the equestrian parking lot where at least one usually winters in recent years, 2/16
Tricolored Blackbirds - a minimum of 600 (and probably quite more) were scoped at a distance from the south facing ridge of pasture adjacent to McNabney Marsh, 2/15, roosting in trees and feeding around the trash piles of the Transfer station.
a trip report for anyone interested can be studied closely here:
