Subject: [SFBirds] Fort Mason Local Interest
The highlight of yesterday's GGBA walk at Fort Mason was an enormous blush of AMERICAN ROBINS. They were literally everywhere - not just on trees and shrubs with berries, but also on the ground and on branches - in every part of Fort Mason. At one point about 450 flew east, but that didn't seem to make a dent in their numbers. Perhaps as many as a thousand (or more) were present. There were also multiple flocks of CEDAR WAXWINGS (20 - 40 in each flock). Mid-morning we watched the overwintering male BULLOCK'S ORIOLE singing from a tree at the cul-de-sac (in with a large group of robins). The overwintering WESTERN TANAGER was behind the General's Residence. One of the GREAT HORNED OWLS was in the palm tree north of the General's Residence.  We saw all three of the overwintering RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS - at the tennis courts, at the Community Garden, and on the hillside above Aquatic Park. A SONG SPARROW was carrying nesting material in the garden. The family of WESTERN BLUEBIRDS (male, female, and offspring from last summer) were going into a nest hole near the tennis courts carrying nesting material - we observed multiple trips into the nest hole.
