Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis) (1)
- Reported Feb 05, 2026 08:36 by Tom Edell
- San Simeon Point, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-121.1946398&<ll...>,-121.1946398 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S298328590 - Comments: "This bird at the same location as Feb 3 at 35.638982, -121.196757. Ron heard it mewing a couple of times and twice saw movement but we could not see the bird. After a while it called again but mostly gave whispered songs or calls. We all finally saw it fly through a short gap in the vegetation. This was a slim, dark gray, bird without wingbars but with a longish gray unmarked tail. Both Mike and Ron saw the dark cap, but we all missed seeing the rusty undertail coverts during our brief view. We continued to look for it for quite a while before giving up and walking to the point. We looked for it again on the way back from the point. Ron had one or two brief views but it eluded Mike and Tom. No photos."
Western Tanager (Piranga ludoviciana) (1) CONFIRMED
- Reported Feb 05, 2026 09:47 by Yamina Pressler
- Cal Poly--San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6608403&<ll...>,-120.6608403 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S298280333 - Media: 2 Photos
- Comments: "I returned to this location (trees on south side of Kennedy library) to see if I could relocate the bird we saw yesterday (02/04/2026). After about 15 minutes, I found presumably the same bird again on a eucalyptus tree branch. The bird flew around between a few branches, a bit lower down allowing for better looks today. All over yellow and darker wings with light bars were noticeable. Short, chunky, pale bill. Tail slightly forked when perched on a branch. Bill shape, tail length relative to body, and wing patterning were used to decide tanager over oriole. The bird stayed on each branch for some time, but eventually flew higher up in the tree and I wasn’t able to find it again. No vocalization. Poor lighting phone photos."
