I also had a "pure" flock of 260 birds on Jan. 3rd in Clay County (north of
Kansas City, south of Kearney) at a captive elk and deer ranch. There had
been a flock of Great-tailed Grackles in this area several years back but
that was by far the largest flock I have seen. At that time, there was
also a medium-sized pond, about 2 miles away, that had thick cattails
around the entire bankline. It had nesting birds there for several years.
Unfortunately, the owner eventually cleared the shoreline of cattails
completely...so no nesting but a lesser sized flock, in the general area,
was often present...
