LaBirders:

I happened to notice just now that the single highest count of any bird
species in the USA on eBird, belongs to Louisiana. It is from a list made
in Cameron Parish on 4/20/1988.

This prompts me to post this trivia question: what was the species?

Rather than ending the competition when I receive the first correct answer,
I will let folks keep posting their guesses (please Reply All so everyone
can see). When these are accumulated, I will post the answer. Searching
maxima for LA or USA in eBird is of course, forbidden.

Red-winged blackbird

As a child and a young teen (born in 1960) we would drive from Lafayette to
Pecan Island (in Vermilion Parish, next to Cameron Parish) and see flocks
of (seemingly) millions of blackbirds stretching for (seemingly) miles. I
now presume that these were mostly red-winged blackbirds. I don't recall
trying to count them at the time. I don't know whether such large flocks
still exist. I don't recall ever seeing as many birds of any other species
in one flock. Thus, I didn't just copy an earlier answer which I saw when I
was scrolling down to respond to the original message.

Thanks,

Seth
