Subject: Re: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] American Bittern at San Elijo
At around 9:30 this morning, on the north side of the trail at 33.01238° N, 117.27172° W by the thick fallen log.

I was trying to get pictures of the shovelers when I scared the bittern I couldn’t see, perched about 5 feet up in the thicket. Flew into the thicket north and wasn’t seen again, even after circling back around an hour later with lesser crowds.

Unmistakably a bittern with a long neck, bill, and legs. Streaking on the neck had a dull rufous hue but the rest of the bittern was overall drab coloration with no distinct coloration like a Least.

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://sandiegofieldornithologists.org/san-diego-county-avian-records-database/.
