Got a good look with binocs (but sadly no photo). Smaller than the White-crowned S, plain gray back, light underside; contrasted black and white head with distinctive black throat."

- Comments: "An all-red tanager with a swollen, horn-colored bill flew across the creek and could be seen in some oak trees from about here: 34.432602, -119.621636 It could be heard making the crickety, two note call; Rob whipped out Merlin which concurred. A bit farther south down the trail than Sue's January 4th bird so possibly the same. [EM]"
