Ann Arbor owned an abandoned building across the street from the YMCA for many years. When they tore is down the birding community convinced the city to save the chimney for the Chimney swifts. For the next 6 months a contractor will be building a sewer for the city and use the vacant lot for a staging area. The city must have warned them that if they damaged the chimney every birder in Ann Arbor would be on their case. The barrier they built looks pretty effective to me.
My house is built into the side of a sandy esker in southwest Sylvan Township. Our 10 acres are either woods or swamp. We never see Eastern Bluebirds around our house except in the winter when they come for water and then just a few for a few days. This winter we have had a dozen or more at a time for days. They come as a flock and never touch the sunflower seeds nearby. There is a Bittersweet vine nearby and the water feature is surrounded by orange poop. In pictures the bright white background turns them into silhouettes.
