On January 1st my first bird of the new year was an EVGR in the yard. They have been here everyday since. On one particular day there were 42, other days there have been 30. Everyday I have at least 5 - 12, hanging around all day. I have one tube feeder which they ignore, preferring the tray feeder and an open feeding space on the ground which I keep shoveled out of snow. They are predominantly female or first year birds but always at least 3-4 males so brightly colored I gawk at them. I can also hear their chattering and communicating when they are flocked up in the deciduous trees around the property, Probably the most entertaining situation is when the Blue Jays try to share the tray feeder and the EVGR never hesitate to charge and chase them away. Having the distraction and joy of watching these birds, the month of January has passed so effortlessly and joyful for me.
