Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) (1)
- Reported Jan 26, 2026 08:58 by Nick & Jane
- Meadow Park--San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, California
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&<q...>,-120.6606531&<ll...>,-120.6606531 - Checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S296469916 - Media: 4 Photos
- Comments: "Adult male high in sycamore, foraging and perching. When I first spotted this bird I could see it flying from low in a bottlebrush to high in a sycamore. What grabbed me was seeing that it didn’t have green on its back or head, and that it was a male. It had a bright orange gorget, brownish-orange crown, mostly orange underside and orangey tail. It did have white below the throat and on its belly. Seems like I read last year when I tormented TE about these birds that the notched tailfeather was only diagnostic when trying to determing a male green-backed rufous hummer—and I noticed no glimmers of green either with the naked eye, using bins, or when I zoomed in with camera. I examined the bird while it moved from branch to branch for a few minutes. In examining my distant photos of its front and profile, I could also see no green. Eventually the bird was chased off by an anna’s. Photos—cropped and originals."
