Subject: [LACoBirds] California Bird Atlas update, including Los Angeles County stats
Hi Birders,

As most of you have heard, California's first statewide Bird Atlas launched on January 1st, 2026 and will run through December 31, 2030.

If you haven’t already, please join the project on the dedicated *California Bird Atlas eBird page ( https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/home )* and begin submitting all of your checklists through the Atlas. Our short *Quick Start video* ( https://www.youtube.com/shorts/8Z3kbqiO9rw ) will walk you through getting set up.

We’ve been blown away by the enthusiasm for the project across the state. As of the most recent update, here are the *statewide stats* :

* *14,554* checklists submitted through the Atlas
* *2,323* Atlas blocks with checklists
* *1,192* Atlasers have submitted checklists to the project
* *57* counties with Atlas data

I wanted to provide a quick Los Angeles County-specific update.

Los Angeles County currently ranks second ( https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/state/US-CA/regions?atlasPeriod=EBIRD_ATL_CA_2026&m= ) in terms of effort hours (total length of all checklists submitted through the Atlas, just behind San Diego County.

Despite it being late January, there have already been several species with *documented* *Confirmed* *breeding behavior in LA County* , including:

* *Band-tailed Pigeon* *,* including this ** great find of an early active nest ( https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/checklist/S294221969 ) by Holly and David Coates at Monrovia Canyon Park.
* *Egyptian Goose* , including precocial, recently hatched chicks ( https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/checklist/S294240824 ) found by Jonathan Rowley at La Mirada Community Regional Park.
* *Anna's Hummingbird* , including this adult building a nest ( https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/checklist/S293773568 ) found by Larry Schmahl at San Gabriel Coastal Basin Spreading Grounds.
* *Allen's Hummingbird* , including this adult carrying nesting material ( https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/checklist/S295377129 ) found by Chris Dean at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.
* *Great Blue Heron* , including nest building ( https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/checklist/S294510457 ) found by Nancy Salem at El Dorado Regional Park.
* *Bald Eagle* , including an occupied nest ( https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/checklist/S295090821 ) found by Lance Benner and Linda Soloff near San Gabriel dam.

If you have any questions regarding how CBA is encouraging the use of breeding codes, please visit this Breeding Codes overview page ( https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/about/breeding-codes ). Also, be sure to visit our FAQs section ( https://ebird.org/atlascalifornia/about/faqs ).

Still have questions? Please reach out to us at *<info...>* , and our team will be happy to help. We are developing additional outreach and educational resources, which will be announced soon.

It’s been incredibly inspiring to see the birding community come together in support of this initiative, which will help drive bird conservation for decades to come.

Happy Birding and Happy Atlasing,
Van Pierszalowski
