I was working in the backyard much of the day and kept a running checklist for several hours. Nothing too surprising showed up, but a I ended up with a list of 25 species which was nice considering our square backyard is only 30 feet wide.
The most interesting sighting was an Anna’s Hummingbird gathering nest material from our fluff dispenser. It grabbed a few bills full and then zipped up into the oak tree above our deck. Maybe that’s where it is building its nest… Anyway, It did this several times so I quickly refilled the feeder to convince it to stick around.
I also observe two Bewick’s Wrens investigation our nest box repeatedly. At one point both birds were inside the box. Similarly, a Chestnut-backed Chickadee was checking out our neighbor’s nest box that sticks up above our fence.
Combined with the fact our Dark-eyed Juncos are singing full voice, it seems at least some birds are getting an early start with spring.
