With the newly reported Painted Bunting at a backyard feeder earlier today
I figured this would be a good reminder for folks.. With significant and
widespread snow and cold moving into the state, bird feeders will be extra
busy. Cold weather means birds have to work extra hard to keep up with
their fast metabolisms so do your best to keep feeders stocked up. Birds
that haven’t been frequenting feeders will show up over this next week,
especially during and directly following the snow. Having food/suet
available is not only going to help these birds get through this weather,
but will lead to some unusual sightings. Basically everything is on the
table here but I’d be looking out for tanagers, warblers, orioles etc.
If you have a rarity at your feeders, do your best to get documentation and
to report it.
Stay safe and happy birding!
