Greetings Birders,
I finished off my Arizona 2025 Big Year with 405 birds, the last of which was an Evening Grosbeak in Flagstaff. So this year I'll be staying closer to home, maybe I'll do a Big Backyard Year.
Yesterday (20 Jan) morning I spent a few hours in the ag fields south of Yuma. Unfortunately not as many raptors as in years past. My count was:19 Red-tailed Hawks19 Ferruginous Hawks3 American KestrelsI did have two flocks of Mountain Plovers, with a combined total of 98 birds. One of the flocks proved especially cooperative, and I was able to capture nice photos and video. Also fun were 84 Long-billed Curlews.
Since we Arizonans border on another terrific state for birding, I thought I would pass on this public service notice. All birders are invited to join "California’s first statewide Breeding Bird Atlas, a community-powered initiative to document breeding birds across the state and generate the science needed to guide habitat protection, restoration, and long-term conservation planning for decades to come." Data will be collected via eBird, and eBird users can join by visiting the following link - https://url.usb.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/8K_sCVJz4qf5xw2oWuGfvHEjbDD?<domain...> eBird reports, the first of which has photos:https://url.usb.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/Bun9CWWA5rTP596mMtxh2HoC6Bf?<domain...>
