Subject: [SanDiegoRegionBirding] Hotspots for eBird Bar Charts Jan 22-31
Hello fellow SD birders,

Thanks again for contributing to our efforts to fill out the weekly eBird
bar charts! This week the number of hotspots covered was *double* the
number from last week!

Highlights include:

* A Summer Tanager at Memorial Park
* Cuyamaca Rancho SP Cold Stream Trail - the first double digit species
count in 5 years owing to a thorough 5 mile / 3 hour effort! (23 species).
Highlights here include a Fox Sparrow and a Purple Finch.
* Montevalle Community Park was birded for the first time since July and
yielded a pretty good audio recording of a Hutton's Vireo
* Phil Unitt birded PQ Carson's Crossing as part of SD Nat's Urban Canyon

For next week, we have a very short list of hotspots nearing completion.
Only 2 spots with fewer than 10 weeks remaining, so 2 more are added to the
list of the week based on fewest weeks remaining. Although these 4 spots
are on the outskirts, we have a few extra days to cover them since this is
the last chart week of the month. As usual for this year, we also have a
second list with about two dozen hotspots that have pretty good coverage
except for the current time of year.

All 4 hotspots on the first list should be comfortably within one
California Bird Atlas block, and the Old Coach Rd. riparian hotspot hasn't
been atlassed at all yet.

Also a reminder: eBird now allows submission of photos of the hotspot
itself (under Experience and/or Habitat). These photos will be featured on
the hotspot page itself. This is a great way to document for others what
the hotspot itself looks like / what a birder visiting for the first time
might expect. No fancy camera necessary - a phone photo will work just
fine! Here's the Carson's Crossing page, for example, currently showcasing
several photos taken by John Bruin in December:

The monthly meetings of San Diego Field Ornithologists (SDFO) are currently virtual, open only to members, at 6pm on the third Tuesday of every month.

Two notable on-line resources are available for San Diego birders: the San Diego County Bird Atlas by Phil Unitt (2004) - http://sdplantatlas.org/BirdAtlas/BirdPages.aspx ; and an update of notable records for San Diego County (2002–present), compiled by Paul Lehman - https://sandiegofieldornithologists.org/san-diego-county-avian-records-database/.
